Grantmaking Overview
WCF offers various types of technical assistance to non-profit groups statewide. This assistance includes consulting and workshops. WCF also provides conferences and events in order to educate and reach out to people on a wide variety of issues.
WCF has been the fiscal sponsor for several groups that don't have nonprofit status, and supported many nonprofits through memberships and sponsorships. (For many years, WCF also provided groups with free computer software through a partnership with the Lotus Philanthropy Program, a program which Lotus recently discontinued.)
Please review the Wisconsin Community Fund Grant Guidelines before applying for any grants:
WCF currently has one General Funding Cycle each fiscal year. Statewide non-profit groups are sent Requests For Proposals at the beginning of the Funding Cycle.
The Grant Allocation Committee reads and rates the applications and holds interviews with each group. The committee then meets to determine which proposals will be funded during that cycle.
Since 1982, WCF has awarded over $3,550,000 in grants to hundreds of organizations all over Wisconsin. WCF currently awards General Fund grants of between $2,000 and $15,000. For an illustration of the types of organizations and projects that these grants have gone to, see this information about our 32d Funding Cycle (2006-2007) Grantees
WCF offers grants of up to $500 for the purpose of responding to current events and unexpected needs. These Special Opportunity Grants are intended to support groups that form between funding cycles, or projects that are planned after our last General Fund cycle has concluded. Application materials for Special Opportunity Grants are available on-line at this site.

In addition to their support of WCF's General Fund, many donors direct part of their annual gift to an area of interest or a particular organization that they want to directly support. These awards are called Donor Advised Grants.
Donor Advised Grants provide donors with the convenience of making personal grants without the paper-work and tax reporting related to personal philanthropy. Some donors prefer to give this way because they can remain anonymous. Wisconsin Community Fund staff handles the record keeping, maintains regular contact with community groups, and keeps up to date information on special areas of interest for donors.
For an illustration of the types of organizations and projects that these grants have gone to, see our information about FY 2005-2006 Donor Advised Grants.
The Fund of the Sacred Circle is a cooperative program of WCF and the Headwaters Fund of Minnesota to support grassroots groups or projects in Minnesota or Wisconsin engaged in social change organizing. Native American community activists working for social justice on a day-to-day basis, make the funding decisions for Fund of the Sacred Circle.

Wisconsin Community Fund regularly gives away donated hardware and office equipment, including copiers, computers, typewriters, and furniture. Since WCF has a relationship with a large number of groups and donors, we are able to help donors find a good home for their used equipment, and help groups to expand their capabilities and keep costs down.
In addition to specific grants it has made, WCF has provided program services to progressive groups in Wisconsin during its history. Program services include technical assistance, education and outreach, fiscal sponsorships, and group memberships and sponsorships.
WCF offers personal and phone counseling services on many subjects, including fundraising, information on foundations, grantwriting to our organization and other foundations, referrals, and non-profit organizing and business procedures.
Over its 18-year history, WCF has also sponsored 17 workshops statewide that have provided training in managerial and technical skills to Wisconsin nonprofits:
WCF holds regular educational events open to the public. These have included conferences on homophobia, racism and countering the right wing, our annual Kwanzaa celebration, and movies and other cultural events.
WCF has been the fiscal sponsor of the Wisconsin Apprentice Organizers Project and Action Wisconsin. We also currently serve as a fiscal sponsor for Workers Independent News Service (a labor news wire service). Since 1996 the total of fiscal sponsorships has topped $636,912.
For an illustration of the types of organizations and projects that WCF has helped through fiscal sponsorship, see our information about Fiscal Sponsored Projects since July 1, 2002.
WCF supports many groups through memberships and sponsorships. This includes financial support of our fundraising umbrella organizations, the Funding Exchange, Community Shares of Greater Milwaukee, and Community Shares of Wisconsin. WCF also supports other groups through sponsorships of their conferences and public events.
